What Happens When a Social Media Post Is Deleted?
Once a post is deleted or made private, its media stops being publicly available, even if a preview still shows up somewhere. Here is what that means for downloads.
The short answer
When a post is deleted, the platform stops serving it publicly, and its media usually stops being available soon after. A downloader cannot fetch it, because there is nothing public left to fetch. Clearlla reports this as a post that is not available, rather than as a temporary error.
The same applies when a post is made private, when an account is suspended or protected, and when a platform removes content.
What changes when a post is removed
Platforms handle the timing differently, and they do not announce it, so it is safest to assume removed media is gone.
- The post page returns a not found message, a login prompt, or a placeholder.
- The platform's public data for that post becomes empty or marks it as removed.
- The media files on the platform's servers are removed or blocked, sometimes immediately and sometimes after a delay.
Deleted versus private
A private post still exists but only some people can see it. To a downloader that never signs in, it looks the same as a deleted post. Clearlla does not log in to any platform and does not try to reach private content, so private and deleted posts both fail.
On X, posts from protected accounts behave this way. On Facebook, videos that need a login, or that sit in groups or on personal profiles, are outside what Clearlla handles.
Why a preview can still appear
Messaging apps, search engines, and link previews often keep a copy of the title and thumbnail from when the link was first shared. That card can stay visible for weeks after the post is gone. It is a snapshot, not a sign the post is still online.
Your own app can also show cached content you watched earlier. Open the link in a private browser window to see what the public sees now.
Expired media links are a different problem
Sometimes the post is still online but the media link you have has expired. Many platforms sign their media links with an expiry time. If a download that worked earlier now fails, paste the post link into Clearlla again to get a fresh media link. If the post itself is gone, that will not help.
How it looks on different platforms
- X: deleted posts and protected accounts return a not available message.
- Facebook: removed or login-only videos are reported as not publicly available.
- Reddit: removed posts can still show a title while the video is gone.
- TikTok: removed or private videos fail at lookup.
- Discord: attachment links stop working when the message is deleted or the signed link expires.
What to try instead
- Check whether the creator reposted it, and use the new link.
- Ask the creator directly if you need a copy for a legitimate reason.
- If you saved the media earlier, check your phone's Downloads folder or Files app.
- Respect the decision. A creator who deleted a post may not want it shared further.
