Why Download Links Expire

Many platforms hand out media links that only work for a limited time. Here is why, and why pasting the post link again fixes it.

The short answer

Many platforms serve media through temporary links that stop working after a set time. If a download fails after you left a tab open for a while, paste the original post link into Clearlla again. That fetches a fresh media link and the download usually works straight away.

What a temporary link is

Platforms store files on content delivery networks, or CDNs. Instead of making those files permanently public, many attach a signature and an expiry time to each link. Once the time passes, the CDN refuses the request, even though the post itself is still online.

Clearlla does not host copies of files. Downloads come from the platform's own servers, so the platform's expiry rules apply.

Where you will notice it

Not every link expires. Streamable files and many images last much longer, so this is a platform by platform behaviour rather than a rule for every download.

  • Discord attachment links are signed and stop working after roughly a day. Copy the link again from Discord.
  • Twitch clips are served through signed URLs that expire.
  • TikTok media links are tied to a session and can stop working after some time.

How to fix an expired link

  • Go back to the original post, clip, or attachment.
  • Copy its share link again. For Discord, copy the attachment link fresh.
  • Paste it into Clearlla and download right away.
