Why Some Video Downloads Have No Sound

A silent download usually means the platform stores sound and picture as separate files. Here is why that happens, which platforms do it, and what Clearlla offers instead.

The short answer

A downloaded video usually has no sound because the platform stores the picture and the sound as two separate files. The downloader saved the video file, which never contained audio. On Clearlla this mostly affects Reddit, where the video file is labelled no audio and the sound is offered as a separate audio track you can download next to it.

Less often, the original post simply has no sound, or the file was a GIF converted to video, which has never had audio.

Why video and audio can be separate

Many platforms use adaptive streaming. They prepare the picture at several sizes and the sound once, then let the player combine them while you watch. That lets the app switch quality smoothly without re-sending the sound.

When you watch, the player joins the two in real time, so you never notice. When you download one of those files on its own, you get exactly what it contains: picture without sound, or sound without picture.

Why the preview has sound but the file does not

The preview inside an app or on the platform's website is that combined player. The downloaded file is one ingredient. It is the same reason a video plays with sound on Reddit but the file in your Downloads folder is silent.

How it works on each platform Clearlla supports

Reddit

Reddit hosts video and audio separately. Clearlla lists the video, labelled with its height and no audio, and, when Reddit provides one, an Audio track in M4A format. Download both if you need sound. Some Reddit videos were uploaded without sound, and then no audio track exists.

TikTok

TikTok video files normally include sound. Clearlla may also list the audio on its own if you only want the sound.

X

X videos include sound. Animated GIFs on X are delivered as MP4 files and are silent by nature, because a GIF has no audio.

Mastodon, Telegram, Twitch, Streamable, and Facebook

These return complete video files with whatever sound the original upload had. Mastodon GIFs are also served as silent MP4s.

Why Clearlla does not add missing audio

Joining a separate audio file to a video file is called muxing. It needs the server or the browser to download both files, process them, and produce a new file. Clearlla does not do that today. It hands you the files the platform actually provides, so what you save is exactly what the platform serves.

If you need a single file with sound from a Reddit post, download the video and the audio track, then combine them in a video editor. Many free editors on desktop and mobile can place an audio track under a video and export one file.

No downloader can recover sound that was never uploaded. If the original post is silent, every copy will be too.

Quick checklist

  • Check the label on the file you saved. If it says no audio, look for an audio track in the same list.
  • Play the original post with the volume up to confirm it has sound.
  • Check whether the post was a GIF. GIFs saved as MP4 are always silent.
  • Try another player. Very occasionally a phone's default player struggles with a file that plays fine elsewhere.
