How to Download Images From Social Media Without Losing Quality

Downloading the actual image file beats a screenshot every time, but the quality you get still depends on what the platform makes available. Here is how it works platform by platform.

The short answer

To keep the most quality, download the image file itself rather than taking a screenshot. Paste the post link into Clearlla and save the image it finds. You get the largest version the platform makes publicly available, without the extra compression and cropping a screenshot adds.

That is not always the original file the creator uploaded. Most platforms resize and compress images when they are posted, and no downloader can recover detail that was removed at that point.

Original, stored, and displayed sizes

A good downloader asks for the stored version, the largest one available. Clearlla does this where the platform offers a larger size, for example the original size option on X images and the largest Pinterest image.

  • Original: the file the creator uploaded. Platforms rarely keep or serve it unchanged.
  • Stored: the version the platform saves after processing, often limited to a maximum width.
  • Displayed: the version shown in the app, usually smaller still, sized for your screen and connection.

What compression does

Compression shrinks files by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to miss. JPG and WEBP both do this. Each round of compression removes a little more. A platform compresses once on upload; a screenshot, saved and shared again, compresses again.

Downloading the file directly avoids adding another round. The file you save is byte for byte what the platform serves.

Why screenshots are worse

  • They capture the displayed size, not the stored size.
  • They include your screen's scaling, and sometimes interface elements.
  • They are saved as a new image, adding compression on many phones.
  • They crop to what fits on screen, which can cut off tall or wide images.

What each image platform provides

Pinterest

Clearlla asks for the largest version of the pin image Pinterest provides and also lists the displayed image. Pinterest's image servers do not let other sites save files directly, so the image opens in a new tab where you can save it.

Bluesky

Bluesky image posts return each image at the full size Bluesky stores. Bluesky support is Limited: image posts only, not video.

Mastodon

Mastodon returns the attachment as the server stores it. Quality varies by server, because each Mastodon instance sets its own processing limits.

Telegram

Public channel photos come from Telegram's public post preview. Support is Limited, and Telegram serves compressed photos rather than files sent as documents.

Discord

A Discord attachment link points at the uploaded file itself, so you usually get the file exactly as it was shared. Support is Limited to attachment links, which expire after a while.

Why your downloaded image is smaller than expected

If an image is smaller than you hoped, the platform probably resized it on upload. Check the dimensions in your file manager or photo app. If two versions are listed in Clearlla, try the larger one.

Format matters too. A WEBP or JPG can look smaller in file size than a PNG at the same dimensions, without looking worse.

Practical tips

  • Always download rather than screenshot when you can.
  • Pick the largest listed version.
  • Keep the downloaded file as it is. Editing and re-saving adds compression.
  • If you need print quality, ask the creator for the original file.
