How to Save Downloaded Videos to Your iPhone or Android Gallery
A downloaded video usually lands in Files or Downloads, not your photo library. Here is how to move it on iPhone and Android.
Why the video is in Files or Downloads, not Photos
When you download something in a mobile browser, the phone treats it like any other file. On iPhone it goes to the Downloads folder in the Files app. On Android it goes to the Downloads folder in internal storage. Neither phone assumes a downloaded file belongs in your photo library, so you have to move it once.
Nothing is wrong with the file. It is a normal MP4 or image, and it just needs one more step.
On iPhone
Downloaded in Safari
After the download finishes, tap the downloads icon in Safari's address bar and open the file, or go to the Files app and open the Downloads folder. With the video open, tap the share button and choose Save Video. For an image, the option is Save Image. The file then appears in Photos.
If Save Video does not appear
Photos accepts MP4 and MOV video and common image formats. If the share sheet only offers Save to Files, the file is probably a format Photos does not import, such as an audio-only MP3 or M4A. Audio files stay in Files or go into an app like Music or a podcast player instead.
On Android
Menus differ between Samsung, Pixel, and other phones, so labels may vary slightly. The idea is the same everywhere.
- Open the Files app (called My Files on Samsung) and go to Downloads.
- Many gallery apps, including Google Photos, already show the Downloads folder under device folders. If yours does, the video is already there.
- If not, long-press the file, choose Move, and move it into the DCIM or Movies folder for video, or Pictures for images. Your gallery will pick it up.
Which formats end up where
- MP4 video: goes into Photos or your gallery
- JPG, PNG, and WEBP images: go into Photos or your gallery, though some older apps handle WEBP poorly
- MP3 and M4A audio: stay in Files or go into a music app; photo galleries do not show audio
