Why a Social Media Link Works in the App but Not in a Downloader

The app sees you signed in; a downloader sees only what the public web shows. That gap explains most failures. Here are the causes and what to do about each.

The short answer

A link works in the app because the app knows who you are. You are signed in, you may follow the account, and the app can use private routes the public cannot. A downloader like Clearlla never signs in, so it only sees what an anonymous visitor on the web sees. If the post is not public, or the platform hides media from signed-out visitors, the downloader cannot get it.

Being able to watch something is not the same as it being publicly downloadable.

The one check that answers most cases

Open the link in a private or incognito browser window, where you are not signed in. If you see a login prompt, an empty page, or a not found message, the post is not public and no public downloader will work. If the post plays normally there, read on.

The common causes

Login walls

Some platforms show content to signed-in users only, or show a preview and then ask for a login. Clearlla does not use accounts, cookies, or passwords, and does not try to get past login walls.

Private or restricted content

Private accounts, protected X accounts, closed groups, friends-only posts, and age-restricted content are visible to you but not to the public.

Unsupported post types

A platform can be supported for some content and not other content. Facebook support covers public Page videos, not Reels, Stories, or profile posts. YouTube support is thumbnails only. Bluesky video posts are not downloadable. Discord works with attachment links, not message or channel links.

Expiring media links

If you pasted a direct media link rather than the post link, it may have expired. Copy the post link again and paste it fresh.

Deleted content and cached views

Your app may show a video you watched earlier from its cache even after the post was removed.

Platform changes

Platforms change their public interfaces without notice. When that happens, a route that worked yesterday can fail today. Clearlla's status page reflects current health, and Limited labels exist because some routes are more fragile than others.

Region and network differences

Some content is limited by country, and platforms sometimes treat requests from servers differently to requests from phones. A post you can see on mobile data at home may not be served the same way to a downloader's server.

Tracking parameters and odd link formats

Extra tracking text after a question mark is normally harmless, and Clearlla ignores what it does not need. Shortened links can be a problem, though: fb.watch links lead to a login page, so copy the full facebook.com link instead.

What to do

  • Test the link in a private browser window.
  • Copy the share link again from the post itself, not from a profile or feed.
  • Check the platform's status on Clearlla's status page.
  • Read the error message. Clearlla names the cause when it can, such as a removed post or an unsupported link type.
  • If the post is private, ask the creator for a copy instead.
