How to Save a YouTube Thumbnail in Full Resolution
Clearlla saves YouTube thumbnails as real JPEG files at the largest size YouTube publishes. It does not download YouTube videos, and this explains why.
The short answer
Paste a public YouTube video link into the Clearlla YouTube page and you get the video's thumbnail as a JPEG file, in the largest size YouTube has published for that video. The best case is 1280x720. Smaller sizes are listed underneath in case you need them.
That is the whole YouTube feature. Clearlla does not download YouTube videos, Shorts as video files, or audio. YouTube is labelled Limited for that reason.
Which thumbnail sizes exist
YouTube generates several versions of each thumbnail. Clearlla checks them in order from largest to smallest and only shows the ones that actually exist for the video you pasted:
- 1280x720, the full HD version, available for most videos uploaded in HD
- 640x480, the standard definition version
- 480x360, the high quality version that almost every video has
- 320x180, the medium version
Why the 1280x720 option is sometimes missing
Older videos and some low-resolution uploads never received a full HD thumbnail. When it does not exist, Clearlla leaves it out rather than giving you a grey placeholder image. The largest size listed is the largest one YouTube has.
How to save it
- Open the video on YouTube and use Share, then Copy link. Links from the address bar, youtu.be short links, and Shorts links all work.
- Paste the link into the Clearlla YouTube page.
- Pick a size and press Download. The file saves with a name like youtube-thumbnail-1280x720.jpg.
Why YouTube video downloading is not supported
YouTube provides no public video or audio rendition-download endpoint for this use case. Getting the media file would mean working around how YouTube's player protects its streams, and Clearlla does not do that.
So the page says what it does, saves thumbnails reliably, and links back to the video on YouTube for watching. If an authorized way to offer more appears, the status will change. Until then, any site promising YouTube video files is doing something Clearlla has chosen not to.
Links that will not work
- Private, deleted, or age-restricted videos
- Playlists, channels, and search result pages, since those are not a single video
